BRITISH WEIGHT LIFTERS’ ASSOCIATION

QUALIFICATION PROCEDURE FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, 2007

 

The BWLA Lifting Steering Group has prepared this procedure in order to update the Qualification Procedure for National Championships, and introduce standardisation for all competitions.

The National Championship Programme includes the following competitions; the British Senior’s, U.23’s, U.20’s, U18’s, U17’s and Masters competitions. It does not include the Development Cup.

A         General

 

  1. The lifter shall be a current member of the BWLA, not in dispute with the BWLA and / or its affiliated bodies or partners. BWLA life members must pay the BWLA Active Life Membership fee.
  1. The lifter shall represent the Division in which they are currently residing according to the geographically defined areas of the BWLA. (For bona fide full-time students, they may choose between their home address or university address, but this must be registered with the BWLA office on registration of membership.

 

  1. Lifters must comply with the BWLA Anti-doping Controls and Procedures.
  1. To be eligible for consideration of selection for British and Home Countries Championships, and therefore selection for international competitions, lifters shall be:
  2. born in the relevant country,
  3. or was born in the British Isles, but with a parent born in the relevant country,
  4. or has previously lifted for the relevant home country,
  5. or has been resident in the country and member of BWLA for one year.

 

  1. Only competitors aged 13 and above may compete in British Weightlifting Championships.

Only competitors aged 14 and above may compete in the British Powerlifting Championships.

  1. To be considered for the National competitions, lifters must
  2. Compete in their respective Divisional Championships (seniors', U.23’s, Junior’s, U.18’s or U17’s respectively), unless they are the reigning British Champion.
  3. Undertake to notify the National Selection Officer promptly if, after selection, the lifter is injured or is for any other reason unable to compete in the national competition.

 

  1. All information regarding British Championships (including invitations forms, venue location and hotels) should be included in BWLA web sites for accessibility.
    B       APPLICATIONS
  1. Invitation reply slips (and entry fees) must be sent to the BWLA Selection Officers by the eight (8) weeks deadline. Incomplete forms will be rejected. If a competitor misses the eight (8) weeks deadline, then they may have a second chance up to four (4) weeks prior to the Championships, but must pay double the entry fee.

 

  1. Must achieve the qualifying total, irrespective of which class they wish to lift in, at an official event at least eight weeks prior to the intended British championship. Qualifying totals must be achieved within the twelve (12) months prior to the British championship.

If a lifter achieves the qualifying total at another National Championships held within the eight (8) weeks notification period, they will automatically qualify for the British Championships.

  1. You may qualify in any competition which is approved by the BWLA, or at an IWF approved competition. See Item C1 below for more details.

 

  1. If championships are not held in your division then contact your BWLA Selection Officer for advice.
  1. Lifters who are injured or ill for their Divisional Championships must obtain a medical note from a doctor and forward the note to their Divisional Secretary or designated representative within five days of the date of the championship.

 

  1. Lifters who are competing for Great Britain (or their Home Country) within two (2) weeks) of the Divisional Championships, will (if they wish) be excused.
  1. A lifter may qualify in a bodyweight category, but may move to higher category provided that he or she has achieved the qualifying total of that higher category. The lifter must inform the Technical Controller of the British Championships.

 

A lifter wishing to compete at a lower category must notify the Selection Officer eight (8) weeks prior to the British Championships.

C         Competitions for Selection to British Championships.

  1. The BWLA will recognise all competitions held under BWLA rules and meeting the following criteria:
    1. Competitions used for selection purposes must be notified to the BWLA Administrative Secretary, at least 30 days before the event for Anti Doping registration.
    2. There shall be three referees adjudicating the competition.
    3. Divisional Secretaries (or designated person) shall help lifters by sending to the Selection Officer and Records Registrar the results and signed score-sheets of all Divisional Championships and Competitions within fourteen (14) days, and keep lifters informed of Championships dates and their closing dates for qualification and entry.

 

2.    The BWLA will also recognise all competitions held under the control of the International Federations.

3.    The BWLA may also recognise National Championships of other nations which are held under International Federation rules, subject to prior arrangement with the BWLA.  This rule covers lifters invited to lift abroad as part of a BWLA approved group or team.

D         Competition Weigh in

 

  1. All competitors must present proof of BWLA membership, and this will be inspected by the referees.
  1. All competitors in U17’s, U.18’s, Junior, U.23’s and Masters must present proof of age (birth certificates or passports) at the weigh-in. At Senior competitions, lifters who may wish to attempt records in U17’s, U.18’, Junior, U.23’s or Masters age groups must present proof of age (birth certificates or passports) at the weigh-in.

                                      

  1. All competitors (including U17’s and Masters) will complete the BWLA Anti Doping Registration form.

E          Appeal

 

1.    Any appeal against non-selection or de-selection must be made to the BWLA Chief Executive, fourteen days prior to the competition. The Chief Executive will use the BWLA Complaint and Quality Improvement Procedure to investigate the appeal.
